A former prison becomes a luxury hotel. The Hotel Liberty in Offenburg offers a unique interplay of historic walls and modern design. The sound system concept by WHD deals individually and intensively with the architectural peculiarities, technology and optics placed high demands on the entire sound system concept during planning. The appearance was generally very important in the Liberty in order to preserve the character of the former use as much as possible. Therefore, invisible sound systems were used in the toilets and in the corridors, which were installed in the ceilings. The meeting rooms were fully automatically, also acoustically, separated via KNX, and special custom-made products, such as gimbal loudspeakers, had to be fitted into existing luminaire housings in the different sound zones.
Hotel Liberty meets the highest design standards without losing its historical context. The architecture of the correctional facility, built in 1840, was radically broken up in 2017 to create a five-star wellness oasis from the massive prison walls. In addition to 38 individually designed rooms and suites, large open room structures such as the atrium restaurant, lounge and library as well as a wine cellar and a floating hall invite guests to celebrate, relax and linger.
