Elbphilharmonie

The musical gateway to the world

The Elbphilharmonie - architectural pearl of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, glass wave in the flow of the Elbe, unique concert hall of world renown, the Grand Hall an acoustic masterpiece developed to the highest modern standards. When the "Elphi" was still in its planning infancy in the early 2000s, the responsible engineering office was looking for a system that could transmit audio data uncompressed and in real time over standard computer networks - and also be controlled via KNX. WHD quickly emerged as the only provider with a suitable audio solution: it was the Multiroom System DAM 6000, consisting of a central unit for six digital sound sources in a maximum of 254 zones, plus the 3 DAM V3 Local In for three further decentralized sources and 80 loudspeaker modules for sound reinforcement in 80 zones - including specially developed software. The DAM system now functions in the Elbphilharmonie as a so-called stage manager system, through which artists are guided onto the stage. In addition, the system received memory and functions for the gongs that call the audience back into the hall after the intermission.

In addition, WHD supplied many other loudspeakers that were specially certified for the Elbphilharmonie according to EN 54-24, such as 300 climate-resistant ceiling loudspeakers UP 14/2 Marine-T6 EN, which were installed outdoors in the roof of the public visitor terrace, the Plaza. Also over 450 UP 14 AB-T3 EN for indoor use, which were custom-painted in different colors and equipped with 2 x 100V transformers each for maximum safety. For the entrance area, 40 UP 14/2-T25 EN were chosen, which were installed there at great heights, including in the ceiling area above the escalators - each equipped with a 100V transformer with 25W power.

The Elbphilharmonie, affectionately known as "Elphi", is one of the most prominent landmarks of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Washed by the Elbe, it resides between Hafencity, Speicherstadt and Landungsbrücken. Designed and planned by the Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron, the building with its concert hall, hotel and apartment complex opened in January 2017 after nine years of construction.
